ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

a) DEPARTMENT PROFILE :

In SPS Nellore District at present Veterinary Health cover is provided by 217 field Veterinary Institutions comprising of 1 Veterinary Poly Clinic at District level manned by Deputy Directors as referral District hospitals providing specialized services in Gynecology, Surgery and Medicine, 23 Taluk level Veterinary Hospitals manned by Assistant Directors, 114 Veterinary Dispensaries manned by Veterinary Assistant Surgeons and 80 Rural Livestock Units at Village level manned by Para Vets are functioning.

There is one Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratories are functioning, at district headquarters with facilities for disease investigation, quick diagnosis and for mapping out diseases to render timely and effective control measures. These are the district referral laboratory for effective diagnosis and vaccine distribution work.

Animal Husbandry activities were reoriented towards increased production of livestock products like Milk, Meat and Eggs, besides providing adequate health care and control of diseases aiming to improve the economy of rural poor through livestock rearing. With its livestock resources and gradual enlightment of the farmers along with dedicated and sustained efforts of the Department over the years have elevated the SPSR District to a prominent position in the State of Andhra Pradesh in the Livestock Sector.

Functions

• Improving the production potential by way of breed up gradation in Cattle and Buffaloes through Artificial Insemination.
• Providing preventive and curative health care to Livestock through constant vigil on disease outbreaks, rendering preventive vaccinations, deworming and treatment of ailing animals.
• Augmenting fodder production to meet the nutritional requirements of Livestock.
• Providing relief measures to livestock during natural calamities.
• Building awareness among farmers on profitable Livestock production.
• Coordinating with Health Department in controlling Diseases of Zoonotic importance.
• Providing technical support to Livestock based poverty alleviation programmes.
• To implement the Y.S.R Pashu Nasta Parihara Padakam.

Schemes taken up:

1. ANIMAL INDUCTION ACTIVITY : Two Animals will be given at a time

(Animals + Insurance (3 years) + Transportation + feeding charges for 90 days)

A. Buffaloes (Murrah Graded Murrah) : Unit Cost

i. Milch Buffaloe : Rs.66150/-

ii. Pregnant Buffaloe : Rs.63150/-

B. Cows (Cross Bred) : Unit Cost

i. Milch Cross Breed Cow : Rs.60900/-

ii. Pregnant Cross Breed Cow : Rs.57900/-

2. SUPPLY OF FEEDING INPUTS ON SUBSIDY BASIS

A. SILAGE :

• Department will supply Silage up to 3600 KGs at a time per farmer which will be sufficient for 4 adult animals @ 15 kg per animal per day for 60 days.
• The total cost of the Silage is Rs. 6.80 Per Kg. Subsidy Rs.4.80 Per Kg and Beneficiary share is Rs. 2/- Per Kg

B. TMR (TOTAL MIXED RATION) :

• Department will supply TMR up to 3600 KGs at a time per farmer which will be sufficient for 4 adult animals @ 15 kg per animal per day for 60 days.
• The total cost of the TMR is Rs. 14.40 Per Kg. Subsidy Rs.10.90 Per Kg and Beneficiary share is Rs. 3.50 Per Kg

C. CONCENTRATE FEED :

• Department will supply Concentrate feed up to 960 KGs at a time per farmer which will be sufficient for 4 adult animals @ 4 kg per animal per day for 60 days.
• Total cost – Rs.15.17, Subsidy – Rs.11.17, Beneficiary share – Rs.4/- Per Kg

D. PEELA KUTTI :

• Total cost – Rs.11/- Per Kg, Subsidy – Rs.8/- Per Kg, Beneficiary share – Rs.3/- Per Kg

E. FODDER SEED :

• Improved varieties 
• of fodder seed is supplied to the beneficiaries to improve fodder production and to reduce the fodder scarcity during drought conditions. 
• Total cost – Rs.58.00, 75 % Cost – 43.50, 25% cost – Rs.14.50

Schemes to be taken up :

1. YSR PASU NASTAPARIHARA PADHAKAM :

• The Government will pay compensation to all categories of livestock owners including big farmers, when mortality is reported in case of Cows / she Buffaloes and to all Sheep & Goat rearers / owners irrespective of caste of the farmer in the event of death.
• The Cows in the age group of 2-10 Yrs. and she Buffaloes in the age group of 3-12 Yrs are eligible for compensation under the scheme
• The Sheep / Goat with 6 months & above age are eligible for compensation under the scheme
• Every death up to 5 animals per family per annum in case of Cows/she Buffaloes and up to 20 animals per family per annum in case of Sheep/Goat can be compensated.
• The mortality of 3 and above Sheep/Goat owned by the farmers at a time on each occasion can only be compensated
• The compensation payable will be @ Rs.30, 000/- per head in case of improved/indigenous Cows/she Buffaloes and Rs.15, 000/- per head in case of Non-Descript Cows/she Buffaloes
• The compensation payable in case of Sheep/ Goat is Rs. 6,000/ – per animal
