Sullurpet Municipality was Constituted as Grade-IIII Municipality vide GO Ms No.32 dt:21.01.2012 and it is a Gate Way of “Sathish Dhavan Space Center SHAR” Sriharikota, which is one of the World Famous Rocket Launching Space Center.
History
The origin of “Sullurupet” came from “Sullu” meaning rounds or circles and “Peta” meaning town. Goddess Chengalamma, a grama devata of shakthi has a temple in Sullurupeta. The celebrations which are conducted here are called Tirunallu. On a particular day a goat will be tied at one end of the pole and will be circled in the air in front of the temple. This Process is called “Sullu” as such the name is known as Sullurupeta. In addition there will also be a ‘teppotsavam’ where the idol of Sri Chengalamma will be carried on a “teppa” i.e., a boat, in the Kalangi river,which flows near the temple. Tirunallu will also involve Mahishasura Mardhini and fireworks.
Sullurpet is having two historical and mythological temples – one is Chengalamma Parameswari Temple located on the banks of Kalangi river which flows western to eastern side i.e., Sri Kalahasthi to Sullurper and flows into Bay of Bengal. History tells us that Goddess Chengalamma Parameswari temple was established during the fourth and fifth centuries. People also refer her as the village goddess “Tenkali”. With the passage of time, She is being worshipped regularly by the devotees as Chengalamma and the devotees turn up in large number to witness “Chengalamma Jatara” (fair).The another is Mannarswamy Temple called “Alugu Mallari KrishnaSwamy Temple” which is located at Mannarpoluru, Sullurpet besides the Kalangi river constructed in the 16 Century according to the available information and it is also an ancient temple and being notified under tourism corridor.
Satish Dhawan Space Center, SHAR
Sullurpeta Municipality is located in SPSR Nellore District,Andhra Pradesh and it is Gateway to “INDIA’S SPACEPORT” commonly called as “Satish Dhavan Space Center, Sriharikota High Altitude Range, (SHAR)” which is 17 kms., distance from Sullurpeta.
The Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) is the launch centre for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It is located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, in India, about 80 km (50 miles) north of Chennai. It was originally called Sriharikota High Altitude Range (SHAR), and was sometimes known as Sriharikota Launching Range. The centre was renamed to its present name in 2002 after the death of ISRO’s former Chairman Satish Dhawan.
Pulicat Lake
Pulicat Sanctuary is located about 60kms, from Chennai, spreading over Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu. It covers a total area of 500 sq.kms. It is famous as the second largest brackish water lagoon in India along the coast of Bay of Bengal. Backwaters of the sea attract large numbers of migratory water birds. It is also a well-known feeding and breeding ground for a variety of aquatic and terrestrial birds mainly flamingo and pelican.
Tallest Dargah in Asian Continent
The village Venadu lies in the interiors of Sulurupeta near Sri Hari Kota (India’s Space Launching Station) in Nellore District. The village is famous for the Dargah of Hazrat Dawood Shah Wali (Rahmatullah Alaih). What’s so unique about this Dargah is the length of the Mazar of the aforesaid Buzurg. The mazar is in a whopping 144 feet length to be precise. Since the mazar is located in the interiors and was not cemented it used to wither away due to strong winds but would again regain its shape once the winds subsided. Recently the mazar was converted into a cemented one by none other than the Mozart of Madras Mr. A. R. Rahman. Nearly 20000 piligrims visit this dargah every month on new moon day and full moon day.
