a) DEPARTMENT PROFILE :

The District of Nellore is located very significantly on the south coast of Andhra Pradesh and become a confluence of Telugu and Tamil cultures. In the proto historic period (4th – 5th Century B.C)it was known as ‘Savara Desa’ ( Tribal origin) and in inscriptions of Ikshvakas and Pallava’s (i.e.3rd – 6th Century A.D) it was called ‘Munda Rashtra ‘ (Tribal origin). The 12th Century A.D inscriptions of Chola’s and Telugu Cholas refers to Nellore as “VIKRAMA SIMHAPURAMANU NELLORE”.The Open Sculpture Museum, in Nellore thrown open to the Public on 17-09-1999, The District Archaeological Museum building was opened on 04-06-2006 ,Site Area – 0.45 Acres.
