SERICULTURE

PROFILE OF SERICULTURE DEPARTMENT:

Sericulture in A.P. is a sustainable farm-based economic enterprise positively favouring the rural poor in the unorganized sector because of its relatively low requirement of fixed capital, and higher returns on investment. Several socio economic studies have affirmed that the cost – benefit ratio of sericulture is the highest among comparable agricultural cash crop.

SCHEMES/ACTIVITIES:

Sericulture is non-comparable farm enterprise that fits well to the unemployed youth in rural, which assures a regular income and ensure 10-15 years . On marketing of cocoons, a farmer gets an income of Rs. 1,20,000 to 1,50,000 in 4 crops per acre/annum in 1.00 acre. Similarly in 2.00 acre garden could get (8) crops with an income of Rs. 25,000/- to 30,000/- per crop with annual income of Rs. 2,40,000/- to 3,00,000/-.

There are two type of silk cocoon producing in SPSR Nellore District i.e. Mulberry and Wild Silk Tasar

  • At present (949) acres of mulberry plantation is existed in the district being practiced by 573 nos. small and marginal farmers in three clusters viz. Marripadu, Kaligiri and Rapur covering 3-4 Mandals in each cluster.
  • The Tasar silk is the 2nd type of silk cocoon production having high potentiality in the district as its food plant T.arjuna raised in 2,000.00 Hac. in Telugu Ganga Project area under compensatory A forestation programme & CAMPA, which is possible to adopt and support 500 to 600 S.T. families (Challa Yanadhies) to generate an additional income of Rs. 20000/- to 25000/- per annum in (2) crops. In departmental policy increase income generation Rs.100000 to 200000 lakhs doubling the income.
  • The stakeholders are supporting under MG-NREGS in development of silk worm food plantation for mulberry with assistance Rs. 1,54,136/-, construction of sheds Type-I Rs.6.12 and Type-II Rs. 4.55 / SC/ST Type-I Rs.6.47 and Type-II Rs. 4.79 per family.
