SPKM INDIAN INSTITUTE OF HANDLOOM TECHNOLOGY, VENKATAGIRI

a) DEPARTMENT PROFILE :

  1. The skill and craftsmanship of the weavers is being passed on from generation to generation since ages. In modern times with the expansion of the global market, and to meet the ever increasing competition or challenge from the highly sophisticated mill-sector of the textile industry, Handloom sector has to develop new technology for its very survival and expansion.
  2. In order to provide the necessary technical personnel to the Handloom and Textile Industry, the Government of India established Institutes of Handloom Technology at 6 places across India and respective State Government have established 4 Institutes.
  3. Institutes under Central Government : (i) Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) (ii) Salem (Tamilnadu) (iii) Guwahati (Assam) (iv) Jodhpur (Rajasthan) (v) Bargar (Orissa) (vi) Shantipur (West Bengal) 
  4. Institutes under State Government : (i) Venkatagiri (Andhra Pradesh) (ii) Gadag (Karnataka) (iii). Kannur (Kerala) (iv). Champa (Chattisgarh)
  5. The SPKM Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Venkatagiri was established in the year 1992 under the auspices of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India but under the administrative control of the Commissioner of Handlooms & Textiles, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad.
  6. This Institute is located in an area of 25 acres of land in the Periyavaram area of Venkatagiri Town. The Institute is providing admissions to 60 students from Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Pondicherry, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharastra every year into 3 year’s Diploma Course in Handloom and Textile Technology.

c) ACTIVITIES :

  1. To lay down the highest possible technical standard of training for the Handloom Industry and to devise short term and long term training programmes for technical personnel to be employed in the Handloom, Textile & Garment sectors.
  2. To devise channels of service in order to build up the closest possible liaison between the Institute and Handloom production units.
  3. To train the Students in latest Garment Making Technology to cater the growing needs of Apparel Industry.

AGE LIMIT FOR ADMISSION

The age prescribed for admission into the institute is between 15 to 23 years as on 1st July of the year of admission and for SC/ST candidates it is 15 to 25 years.

SELECTION

For the seats allotted to Andhra Pradesh and other states, the concerned state governments sponsor the candidates basing on merit in the Xth or equivalent examination through Counselling.

STIPEND

Each student admitted into the course will be eligible for stipend for a period of 10 Months in a year as mentioned below.

1st Year Students : 1,000/- Per Month

2nd Year Students : 1,100/- Per Month

3rd Year Students : 1,200/- Per Month

AWARDING DIPLOMA

The candidates who have successfully completed the course and passed the Final Examination, shall be awarded the D.H.T.T(Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology) by the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, New Delhi and approved by AICTE, New Delhi.

  • Out of 923, 80% are employed in various Handloom related exports / Garment Exports / Garments Manufacturing units/ Processing / Spinning Designing and Testing Organizations. Few interested candidates have established self employment units and are providing employment opportunities to other weavers also.
